From the "Bring the greater intention into every act" department:

Cliff Ravenscraft is a professional podcaster, and he wants audio podcasting to not only be his living, but also a valuable part of being in community.

So when he had lunch with his new friend Chris Bergman yesterday, their lunch became a podcast.

This entry is about a WVXU report by Ann Thompson on some encouraging community development in College Hill.

Her story, "Residents help rejuvenate College Hill", aired on 91.7 FM this morning and presents College Hill as a community growing back to vitality as a result of local engagement.

As a mini-distraction I like knowing that people I care about are out there living life to the max. Former Cincinnatian Greg Meyer is out there having adventures and writing about them here.
Tomorrow is local radio personality Gary Burbank's last day live on WLW before he retires (re-runs will continue through the end of the year). When Cincinnati Post staffer Rick Bird interviewed Burbank for a story that appeared last week, Burbank offered to have a Post-themed "Sports or Consequences" as a tribute to the newspaper before it closes for good - after 126 years of service to the community - Dec. 31. Today is the big radio gig, from 4 to 6 p.m. on 700 WLW-AM. Tune in (listen live online) and call in.

is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news that former homeless
person turned homeless advocate and editor of Street Vibes, the
Cincinnati newspaper written by homeless people, Jimmy Heath died on Thursday after a fight with liver disease.

I am not exactly sure when I met Jimmy for the first time - I believe
it was about four years ago - but I know that he and his amazing
photographs left an indelible mark on my life. His story was a remarkable
one of overcoming incredible odds, going from rabid alcoholic who
wanted no more than to die in his sleep and thought drinking and
drinking would help achieve that to accomplished photographer who
showed his work around the globe.

Starting with the Jan. 2 edition I will become a columnist at Cincinnati CityBeat.

The paper is undergoing a mild "refresh" that will include some neat
improvements to the layout, design, writing and coverage in the paper.
My column will appear in the "Voices" section of the paper and be in
every week.

I will be writing about news, issues, events, people, places and all
sorts of things about Cincinnati. I'm very much looking forward to it -
and, of course, working on making Cincy.com an outstanding Web site...

Since Thursday morning, SuperTalk FM 96 5, where I have co-hosted "City Talk Radio" since March, has been playing construction noises in anticipation, reportedly, of a change in formats.

Well, this morning I have received confirmation that the station is going country and Western at noon today. That also means that "City Talk Radio" has been officially canceled.

As mentioned in my questionably useful tribute to Twitter
earlier today, I received a cell phone "tweet" this afternoon of a story
by Joe Strupp about the Cincinnati Post's impending year end closing.
The story is published at: editorandpublisher.com.

Among the interesting points in his story for me was this:

Future plans for many of the staff are telling about
the bleak journalism prospects. Shelly Whitehead, a police reporter, is
going to work in internal communications at a hospital, while former
Managing Editor Mark Neikirk, a 28-year Post veteran, has signed on to
run a project at Northern Kentucky University.

"There is life after journalism," Neikirk says, but
admits, "I liked going to battle everyday in the newsroom." He says he
has still not let himself think about the paper's eventual end: "It is
bad, there have always been two voices in Cincinnati."

Whitehead, who spoke via cell phone while working her
beat at a local police station, said she is glad to get out of news
because the industry has strayed from storytelling into "quick,
constant updating."

The part about straying from storytelling into "quick, constant updating" is a thought that strikes me as important.

Twittering the day away

"The wonderful thing about Twitter, is Twitter's a wonderful thing"
(Apologies to Tigger and Pooh...).

You say you don't know what Twitter
is? That's ok. Lots of us are relative newbies. It's worth a look and
depending on your interest in text messaging tools and toys, it may be
worth trying for yourself.

At its most basic level, Twitter is a networking tool that helps users
keep abreast of what
friends, or strangers, are doing. It can be useless or useful, depending on who you ask and how you choose to use it.

Here's why it was useful today:

I got a text message on my cell phone that read:

"(Poynter): Romenesko: Cincy Post
staffers pack up as they put out their last editions: Editor &
Publisher... http://tinyurl.com/35sduu"

The reason I got it is interesting...

So begins the About page of her new blog at new2cincy.wordpress.com.

She didn't waste any time changing that. Her latest online work is an
attractive, thoughtful piece of hospitality. It provides a local's look
at life in the city, and one that holds appeal for newcomers and long
time residents, alike.
This is a little off topic for what I am doing in Iowa, but I have just learned from CityKin that the Cincinnati Ballet's annual Nutcracker performance has left Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine, where it has presumably been performed since its beginnings, and is now at the Aronoff Center in downtown.
A comment on the site indicates a "scheduling conflict" is being blamed for the change.
Weather forecasts today call for up to six inches of snow, coupled with ice, between about now and 3 p.m. That could present a serious challenge to the group of students from Xavier University who are scattered among the various presidential candidates' campaigns doing everything from door-knocking to stuffing envelopes.

A quick check out the hotel room window reveals a dusting of snow has fallen in the last hour or so, but precipitation has all but stopped. Radar shows more is on the way, however.

Some students reported last evening that they had been told by campaign officials that they may not get picked up for several hours today if the weather turns ugly.

Later today, I will be reporting from the Brown & Black Forum, a meeting of Democratic presidential candidates. It will be broadcast live on HDNet.
Cincinnati on highway overpasses and in front yards have made an impact
on at least one demographic: Xavier University students.

Matthew Finger, managing editor of Xavier's "News Wire," the
student-run newspaper, is one of four students who have chosen to work
on the Republican Texas Congressman and past Libertarian Party
presidential candidate's Iowa caucus campaign.
We (that's me, along with the Xavier University contingent) arrived in Des Moines, Iowa a few hours ago. I am in my hotel room - rumored to be in the same hotel Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama will be using this weekend - getting the Internet up and running. It appears to be working. Look for more updates all weekend long.

Never since high school have
more people asked me the same question over and over again. Back then
it was what I was going to do when I graduated, including what college
I planned to attend and what my major would be.

These days it has been what I would be doing after The Cincinnati Post closes Dec. 31.
